Arts and Crafts Extension with Views

This outstanding Arts and Crafts house is a landmark in Frensham with its breathtaking three storey vertical scale and intricate towering chimneys, disappearing into the heavens. The owners asked us to create a new bedroom, playroom as well as a kitchen and dining room to look out towards Frensham Great Pond. A first-floor guest bedroom at the back of the existing house would have blocked the neighbour’s own precious view to the pond. The answer? A beautiful small tower which book ends the new kitchen-dining room. This space has circular, castellated steel trusses on display and a long array of window seats sitting on a local ironstone base. At the rear, the roof is glazed and the whole space is filled with light. Little features abound such as a built-in fountain, a neat, gated undercroft and welcoming back door which make the scheme jewel-like. The scale of the extension is deliberately low in contrast to the main house but takes the opportunity to use the same rich palate of materials in a fun new way. We were delighted that the scheme was highly commended in the 2022 Waverley Design Awards.
