Castle Street Car parking

We were approached by one of the residents in Farnham who was looking to improve the general parking layout and pedestrian access in Castle Street. Castle Street is one of the most prominent streets in Farnham town, not only because it leads to Farnham Castle but also because of its rich, immaculately preserved architecture. The road consists of red brick Georgian town houses, shops and markets kiosks. It is a wide road and cars often drive fast making it difficult for pedestrians to cross. Given the popularity of the street, the residence that live in its town houses have problems parking their cars.

We proposed categorising the parking so that it will not only benefit those that visit the shops but will also benefit the residents that live there. By narrowing the road in certain areas, we attempted to create ‘breathing spots’ where the cars would reduce their speed for pedestrians to cross at ease. We added more seating areas, surrounded with planting for people to sit. The overal idea was to create a more resident friendly zone.
